Course 3: Precursors to Development Online

There are certain preconditions that must be assessed before undertaking a community development endeavor. While an insufficiency of the two prerequisites we are going to discuss here—trust and social capital—by no means heralds an utter lack of growth potential, it does make successful and sustainable community development more difficult. Trust, on a macroscopic, society-wide scale, is difficult to cultivate methodically or quickly. Social capital, likewise, is best when it unfolds organically. Yet, both of these pieces are essential to the development puzzle. Is a lack of trust or social capital an obstacle that can be overcome? If so, how?
