CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Course 2: Poverty and Development Online

According to the most recent World Bank estimates, 1.4 billion people in the developing world live on less than $1.25 a day.(1) Furthermore, at least 80% of humanity subsists on less than $10 a day.(2) Despite the ability of statistical analyses like these to communicate the magnitude of the issue, poverty cannot just be seen as inadequacies in income or consumption. Poverty has multiple dimensions, constituting it as a “pronounced deprivation in well-being.”(3) But, as “one of the most ubiquitous and long-standing problems facing governments and populations throughout the world,” it does not have a quick fix.(4) How should poverty be perceived, and why is it such a pervasive issue?
