CERTIFICATE IN EFFECTIVE PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT

Course 3: Effective Program Development Online

For development programs to be effective, they first must implement designs that are evidence-based and tested in the field. See Evidence-Based Program Design for more information about the importance and design of evidence-based programs. Secondly, for development programs to be effective, they must measure their impact. In order to do so, they must focus on their outcomes, instead of their outputs. For more information about the importance of outcomes, please see Outcomes are Essential in Global Health. There are also many pitfalls that must be avoided when designing development programs. For a comprehensive review of these issues, please see The Importance of Avoiding Pitfalls in Global Health & Development. Lastly, it is critical to ensure that programs are ethical. In order to do so, one needs to consider the program’s feasibility, if it will address the most pressing health needs, if it will place a burden on the community, or if it is culturally appropriate. For a more comprehensive discussion of these issues, please see the Ethics of Innovation article.

This course is freely and publicly available. It is also part of the Certificate in Effective Program Development.
